TV Fact #142 – March 5th, 2015:

“The Americans” (2013-Present) was created by Joe Weisberg who stated that he had no idea about who would star in the series before casting began. FX president John Landgraf had the idea to cast actress Keri Russell in the series while Leslie Feldman, the head of casting at DreamWorks, saw actor Matthew Rhys in a play and suggested him to Weisberg.

Russell and Rhys had met briefly at a party years before, but were not fully introduced although they both were attracted to the series because of its focus on the relationship between their characters. And so, from a star-crossed meeting years ago they became cast as the married couple of Elizabeth Jennings (Played by Keri Russell) and Philip Jennings (Played by Matthew Rhys) and, I imagine, and very well introduced to each other now.
