TV Fact #195 – May 7th, 2015:

Actor Neil Patrick Harris may be more recently famous for playing playboy Barney Stinson in “How I Met Your Mother” (2005-2014), but he started out playing his now famous role of Dr. Douglas “Doogie” Howser on “Doogie Howser, M.D.” (1989-1993). Funny thing is…it almost didn’t happen for Harris.

While Harris was the first actor the show’s staff had found that could convincingly play a teenaged doctor, ABC executives opposed his casting, but the show’s co-creator Steven Bochco had a contract that required that the network pay an “enormous” penalty if it canceled the project. So ABC was forced to let him film the pilot. While the network still opposed Harris’s casting and disliked the pilot, after positive reception during test screenings, ABC greenlit the show.

As everyone knows now, Harris is an openly gay man as an adult…but it seems he has faced adversity in a lot of ways throughout his career besides the obvious. It seems, like today, that never stopped him.
