Movie Fact #752 – May 15th, 2015:

1996’s “Sling Blade” was mentioned last night as one of only three films since the inception of the Best Adapted Screenplay category at Academy Awards to win the award without receiving a Best Picture nomination as well alongside 1952’s “The Bad and the Beautiful” and 1998’s “Gods and Monsters”. Interestingly, unlike the other two films, “Sling Blade” was adapted from the short film and previous screenplay, “Some Folks Call It a Sling Blade”, of “Sling Blades” own star, actor Billy Bob Thornton. Besides playing the lead character Karl Childers, Thornton also wrote and directed the film. Just shows hard work pays off.
