Movie Fact #813 – July 15th, 2015:

The 1992 film “The Player”, based off the novel of the same by author Michael Tolkin who also wrote the screenplay for the film, was a satirical film about Hollywood with many film references and Hollywood insider jokes. Around sixty Hollywood celebrities agreed to make cameo appearances in the film. None of these cameo appearances were written in the script. Director Robert Altman wrote them all in with no scripted dialogue given to an celebrity who made a cameo.

On a side note, the film has more Oscar-winning actors in the cast (12) than any other movie in history. Actress Cher, actor James Coburn, actress Louise Fletcher, actress Whoopi Goldberg, actor Joel Grey, actress Anjelica Huston, actor Jack Lemmon, actress Marlee Matlin, actor Tim Robbins, actress Julia Roberts, actress Susan Sarandon, actor Rod Steiger. Technically it’s 13 if you count Oscar-winning producer-director Sydney Pollack who also makes a cameo appearance. Also includes 13 other personalities who received Oscar nominations. These were Karen Black, Dean Stockwell, Michael Tolkin, Gary Busey, Peter Falk, Teri Garr, Jeff Goldblum, Elliott Gould, Buck Henry, Sally Kellerman, Burt Reynolds, Nick Nolte, Lily Tomlin. Julia Roberts – among others – did her cameo for nothing.

Talk about bringing in the cavalry huh?
