Movie Fact #833 – August 3rd, 2015:

The 1973 Spanish film “The Spirit of the Beehive” (Spanish: El espíritu de la colmena) has the four main characters each having a first name identical to that of the actor/actress playing them. This is because actress Ana Torrent, who was at the very young age of seven at the time of filming, was confused by the on- and off-screen naming. So director Victor Erice simply changed the script to adopt the actors names for the characters. This is why lead actor Fernando Fernán Gómez’s character was named Fernando, actress Teresa Gimpera’s character was named Teresa, Ana Torrent’s character was named Ana, and actress Isabel Tellería’s name was Isabel. Well sure didn’t worry about them getting each other’s names wrong I imagine. I wonder…did that maybe help them develop relationships with each other by identifying their characters with the same name?
