Movie Fact #837 – August 7th, 2015:

The 1987 Danish-Swedish drama film “Pelle the Conqueror”  (Danish: Pelle Erobreren, Swedish: Pelle erövraren), adapted from the 1910 novel of the same name by author Martin Andersen Nexø, won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1988. It was submitted to the Academy by the Danish government, giving Denmark its second consecutive win after 1987’s “Babette’s Feast”. While “Pelle the Conqueror” was released overseas in 1987, it didn’t reach the states till 1988, hence how it could win the year after “Babette’s Feast” which came out in actuality in 1987 as well.
