TV Fact #317 – September 5th, 2015:

The American sitcom “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis” (1959-1963) is significant as the first American television program produced for a major network to feature teenagers as leading characters. In other series, such as “Father Knows Best” (1954-1960) and “Leave It to Beaver” (1953-1963), teenagers were portrayed as supporting characters in a family story. While the American sitcom “Meet Corliss Archer” featured teenagers in leading roles and aired in syndication, the show only ran from April to December 1954.
