TV Fact #324 – September 12th, 2015:

The American Western television series “The Virginian” (1962-1971) is a spin-off from a 1958 summer NBC anthology TV series called “Decision”. See the episodes of “Decision” consisted of repurposed failed pilots, including a TV adaptation of the author Owen Wister’s 1902 novel “The Virginian”. That episode of “Decision” starred James Drury as the character “The Virginian” and Drury would then go on to play the character full time in the show “The Virginian”. It was a great success too.

Behind “Gunsmoke” (1955-1975) at twenty seasons and 635 episodes and “Bonanza” (1959-1973) at fourteen seasons and 430 episodes, “The Virginian” is television’s third longest running western at nine seasons and 249 episodes.

Who knew a little episode in an anthology series could take on a life of its own and flourish to such greatness that remains in the history books of television.
