Movie Fact #868 – September 27th, 2015:

The 1950 romantic comedy film “Key to the City” saw quite the personal challenge for lead actress Loretta Young, who played the lead character Clarissa Standish.

First off, Dore Schary, the head of MGM, personally asked Young to be the co-star of Clark Gable in the film, Gable having played the lead character Steve Fisk. Schary asked this even though he knew about the affair and love child (Actress Judy Lewis) between the two actors fifteen years earlier. However, Young accepted because refusing would lead to more rumors than during their affair. And, ironically, production was briefly suspended when Young had a miscarriage.

Perhaps this is not tragic but rather a tribute to Young’s strength as a woman and a working actress.
