Movie Fact #855 – October 14th, 2015:

The 1996 period film “Emma”, based on the novel of the same name by author Jane Austen, features the characters Mrs. Bates and Miss Bates, who are mother and daughter in the film. They are actually played by real-life mother and daughter Phyllida Law and Sophie Thompson who are also real-life mother and sister to Academy-Award-winning actress and screenwriter Emma Thompson. Emma Thompson had just won Best Adapted Screenplay for her script for the 1995 film “Sense and Sensibility”, also based on a work by author Jane Austen, specifically the 1811 novel of the same name. Guess Austen was quite the influence on that family.
