TV Fact #399 – November 26th, 2015:

The French and Canadian animated television series “Totally Spies!” (2001-Present) was originally was made to resemble anime styles and was originally based on the concept of a girl band. This idea came from the rise of girl band and female singers in the music industry. Wanting to capitalize on the niche, David Michel and Vincent Chalvon-Demersay began putting the idea into play.

However, Michel later spoke about how, before the show aired, there were a lot of boy action-adventure shows and practically nothing for girls, yet in pop culture, there was Britney Spears and Spice Girls. This led to changing it to three spies. He said that the characters are heavily inspired by the movie 1995 film “Clueless” and wanted to mix that with a James Bond format. And also, the year before the show came out, the 2000 film “Charlie’s Angels” appeared allowing “Totally Spies!” to thrive in a new market of girl-focused properties.
